TRANSIT LOUNGE 2008 > Bianca Calandra
print
Bianca Calandra is a Sydney born artist who crosses both music/sound and the visual art platforms. Currently her main project is the experimental pop/electro band ‘Machine est mon coeur’ (with French composer Gabin Lopez). Their atmospheric music at times draws influence from Stockhausen, John Frusciante (solo), musique concrete and David Bowie. Their first EP, produced and co-written by B.Calandra, is "Delicate experimental electronic with a wee bit of goose-bump-invoking female vocals, for fans of Múm and Sigur Rós" - Annette Loudon http://www.rightround.com/content/songs/195/

For more info on ‘Machine est mon coeur’ visit www.machineestmoncoeur.com

Her first solo recording ‘Elevate the everyday ordinary’ (2004) was co-produced by B.Calandra and Dean Manning (Leonardo’s Bride, Holidays on Ice), and was a reflection of Bianca’s unique approach to sound production and composition. Her sound was created by merging acoustic with electronic and utilising many found sounds from her surrounding environments and implimenting these into song compositions. The EP was “in occasions really close to experimental jazz and other times close to the intimacy seen in Stina Nordanstam’s work” – Iker. 13/4/04 (www.popchild.com) For more information on her solo project visit www.myspace.com/bcalandra

Bianca participated in Transit Lounge in 2006, was awarded a BUZZ grant from the Australia Council in 2004 to develop new music/sound material, was a featured artist by NOISE (Australian National Youth Media Arts Festival) in 2003 and completed a BA of Design (UNSW, COFA) in 1999.

In between these dates, she has exhibited and performed her visual art and music (respectively) in Australia and Berlin in both venues and festivals. She has also worked with the likes of Dean Manning, Oliver Smith (Coda, Nouvelle Vague, Entropic), Naomi Radom (Coda), Sandrine, Mark Axiak (Iota) and Berlin Artist Asta Gröting.
